About the Program
Research Training in Pure Mathematics
The PhD in Mathematical Sciences at Universidad de La Frontera opens its 2026 call, aimed at Chilean and international students who wish to conduct research in mathematics. With over a decade of experience and accredited for five years by the National Accreditation Commission (CNA-Chile), the program offers high-level training, oriented toward advanced research and the strengthening of disciplinary knowledge.

Application Process Stages
The application process comprises four stages, defined under academic criteria and formal procedures applicable to all applications.
Application Submission
Submission of required documentation in digital format (.zip) to the official program email. The application will be valid upon completing all information within the deadline.
Academic Evaluation
The Academic Committee will evaluate applications considering academic background, previous training, and other criteria defined by the program.
Selection Results
Official communication of selection process results through the program's institutional channels.
Enrollment
Selected candidates must formalize their enrollment within established deadlines for the start of the first academic semester.
Important Information
The Academic Committee may require a personal interview and/or admission exam if deemed necessary to comprehensively evaluate your application. This decision will depend on the academic profile of each applicant and established evaluation criteria.

Requirements
Academic Degree
Hold the academic degree of Bachelor or Master, or an equivalent title in the area of Mathematical Sciences, awarded by a Chilean or foreign university.
Grade Point Average
Have an undergraduate GPA of 5.0 or higher (on a scale of 1.0 to 7.0); or be within the top 30% of your undergraduate graduating class ranking.
Exclusive Dedication
Availability for exclusive dedication to the program during its duration (8 semesters).
Documents to Submit
Application Form
Degree and Grade Certificate
Certified copy of professional title certificate and/or academic degree in mathematics or related areas.
Grade Transcript
Certificate of undergraduate grades and/or highest degree obtained. For international applicants, this document must clearly specify the evaluation scale used and minimum passing grade. Certified copy required.
Graduation Ranking
Certificate of graduation ranking issued by your university of origin, clearly indicating your position relative to your graduating class.
Identification
Photocopy of ID card (both sides) or valid passport for international applicants.
Digital Photo
Recent digital photo in JPG or PNG format (passport size, clear background).
Curriculum Vitae
Updated CV including: publications, project participation, conferences, teaching experience, and other relevant experience.
Statement of Purpose
Letter stating: reasons for application, area of research interest, funding possibilities, potential preliminary work, and time commitment to the program.
Letters of Recommendation
Two confidential letters addressed to the program director. Recommenders must be academics from the university where you obtained your degree or your current institution, with experience in the field. Letters must be sent directly to: doctorado.mat@ufrontera.cl

Evaluation Criteria
The Academic Committee will evaluate applications considering academic background and criteria defined by the program, aimed at assessing training, research capacity, and academic projection of applicants.
Academic Background
Possession of a Bachelor or Master degree or equivalent title in Mathematical Sciences. Grades obtained in undergraduate and graduate studies will be evaluated, with special attention to courses relevant to the declared research area.
Professional and Academic Experience
Work and academic experience, including the relevance of achievements and previous experiences in relation to program study areas. Consistency and progression in career, as well as demonstration of skills, competencies, and outstanding achievements are considered.
Study Objectives - Statement of Purpose
Demonstration of research interest aligned with program's research areas. Manifestation of commitment and dedication, as well as vision on how you plan to contribute to society after obtaining the academic degree.
Personal Interview and/or Admission Exam
If required by the Academic Committee, a personal interview and/or admission exam may be requested, evaluating academic preparation, program understanding, and disciplinary mastery.

The selection process is based on objective criteria and clearly established guidelines, without establishing arbitrary discrimination between received applications. All applicants will be formally informed of the selection process results through an email sent by the Program Director, regardless of the decision adopted by the Academic Committee. Enrollment formalizes incorporation into the program and grants regular student status, committing the admitted student to compliance with current institutional regulations.

ANID — National Competition
ANID National Doctorate Scholarship
Annual competition for accredited programs. Covers full tuition and provides monthly maintenance allowance for the regular duration of the program.
UFRO — Institutional Scholarships
Universidad de La Frontera Internal Scholarships
For persons enrolled in the program. Requirement: Must have previously applied for ANID Scholarship. Scholarships are renewed annually. Students with UFRO scholarships must apply to ANID 2027 to maintain eligibility.
